Easy Bloody Mary recipe: How to make a Bloody mary cocktail

Bloody Mary is a spicy mixed vodka drink that is the perfect accompaniment to any party. Use the best vodka to make this mixed drink.

What is a Bloody Mary?

The Bloody Mary is a vodka cocktail that contains tomato juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and a mix of herbs and spices. Bartenders usually serve a Bloody Mary in a tall glass, such as a pint or highball glass. This mixed drink is similar to the Michelada (which combines tomato juice and hot sauce with light beer) and the Bloody Caesar (which mixes vodka with a salty Clamat).

A brief history of the cocktail

Many origin stories surround the mythical Bloody Mary, all set in the 1920s and 1930s. Parisian bartender Fernand Petiot claimed to have invented the drink at Harry’s New York Bar, which also claims to be the birthplace of classic cocktails like the Sidecar and the French 75.

However, New Yorks 21 Club also claims to have invented the cocktail - either by bartender Henry Zbikiewicz or comedian and frequent patron George Jessel. Detailing the origin of the drink in his memoir The Way I Lived (1975), Jessel says he had some thought in mind when creating the drink, socialite Mary Brown Warburton, who nicknamed herself "Bloody Mary" in reference to the red spots. the drink was left on her clothes.

Like the origin of the cocktail itself, however, the name Bloody Mary is mired in myth: The most common claim is that it is named after Queen Mary I of England, who earned the nickname "Bloody Mary" during her reign.

What are the ingredients in a Bloody Mary?

A classic Bloody Mary contains vodka and tomato juice and spices that vary by location and preference. Traditional ingredients include Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, garlic and horseradish. Bartenders usually season the drink with celery salt and black pepper and finish it off with a garnish of green olives, celery sticks, and lemon wedges.

The Bloody Mary has long been a favorite among bartenders for its highly customizable preparation.
